Loosing weight through a healthy diet can be hard/frustrating with all the different standards of what healthy eating actually is. In my opinion, if it didn’t come strait from the earth, the level of nutrition (health) drops drastically. The more processed the food the less health benefits it actually contains. Take an 85calorie cookie and an 85calorie apple. Both have the same caloric content, and, if you look at the two more closely, the apple may even have more sugar than the cookie. When on a diet that only considers the amount of calories you are consuming these two items appear to be similar, or even the same in value. I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to know that the apple is 10x more nutritious than the cookie, however most people counting calories are not considering the nutrients in their food choices and instead their focus remains on not going over their calories for the day.

So next time you want a snack, grab an apple, not a cookie. Still hungry? Grab another one! Here is a secret for ya, the fiber content in the apple is the bulk of the calories, and guess what? Fiber CAN NOT be stored as fat, in fact the body doesn’t really absorb those calories at all. Meaning? They do not count towards the total number of calories you eat. Interesting stuff huh!
Here is one of my favorite non-boring low calorie whole food, and filling snacks. Dip carrots, celery, cucumbers or your favorite veggies. Go ahead and eat the whole thing!! Approximate calories, 300.
1 large avocado
1 cup steamed broccoli
1/2 red onion, diced
1 jalapeno, chopped (first charred on a flame if possible)
1 tomato, diced
Juice of half a lime
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tsp. of salt
Steam the broccoli until nicely soft, even slightly overdone is okay. They key is for it to not have any toughness, crispness, rigidity at all. Let it cool and in a large mixing bowl, mash it down with your hands, squeezing out a lot of the excess moisture. Next, peel a ripe avocado and mush it up with a fork or your hands if you prefer, mixing it with the avocado. Combine all the remaining ingredients and mix vigorously.
