Loosing weight through a healthy diet can be hard/frustrating with all the different standards of what healthy eating actually is. In my opinion, if it didn’t come strait from the earth, the level of nutrition (health) drops drastically. The more processed the food the less health benefits it actually contains. Take an 85calorie cookie and an 85calorie apple. Both have the same caloric content, and, if you look at the two more closely, the apple may even have more sugar than the cookie. When on a diet that only considers the amount of calories you are consuming these two items appear to be similar, or even the same in value. I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to know that the apple is 10x more nutritious than the cookie, however most people counting calories are not considering the nutrients in their food choices and instead their focus remains on not going over their calories for the day.
What if I told you that calculating calories in VS calories out is NOT in fact an ideal way to loose weight. I am not saying that it is not a good idea to track your calories, but most people are missing a HUGE component when logging their food. Calories should not be your only concern. Nutritional value in your food has a HUGE impact on your body’s ability to loose weight. Food that is more nutrient dense helps your body to run at a more optimal rate, allowin
g it to be capable of burning fuel (calories) more efficiently. Isn’t that what everyone’s goal is to begin with, burn more calories? The best way to burn more calories is to support your system with foods that it was designed to eat, helping it function at its highest potential. And what are those foods? You guessed it, foods from the earth. All too often we fail to consider how the nutrients from the cookie and the apple react in our bodies when we eat it. Although the apple has more sugar in it, fructose, unless eaten at very high quantities, fructose will not necessarily spike blood sugar. This means that your pancreas does not have to release insulin to carry the sugar (energy) into your cells making it easier/faster for your body to supply you with the energy you need. What do you do with that extra energy your body is no longer wasting? Use it as fuel for your workouts!! When our body is not constantly bombarded with sugar (and other processed foods), it can do what it was made to do, burn fuel! What fuel does your body want to burn most? FAT. By eating whole foods you are allowing your body to tap into your excess fat stores as fuel instead of breaking down all the foreign stored carbohydrates your body has accumulated. If you continue to feed your body processed foods, it will never had a chance to tap into the precious fat it is craving to burn. Give your system a break with whole, natural foods and enjoy the extra energy that comes with a clean eating lifestyle.
Now that we know the secret to burning more fat it should be so simple to loose weight right? Wrong! With our busy lifestyles today its very hard to pre plan healthy meals, let alone meals on the go. How can we improve our eating habits without it interfering with our busy schedules? Pre make/ Pre plan meals. It is a little extra work but it pays off in the long run. Trust me, your waistline with thank you!
Ok so you are on board with this whole new lifestyle thing, your eating habits have improved you are seeing the scale moving in the right direction but now you are faced with a completely different problem, FOOD BOREDOM. Food boredom is very common when adapting to clean eating. I hear a lot of people say, “I was just so sick of eating salads all the time that I gave up, it doesn’t work for me”. Or, “I missed my favorite foo
ds too much.” Unfortunately when that happens and people adopt back their old eating habits, the weight piles back on almost instantly. Why? Because our bodies do not like that kind of food! That, ladies and gentlemen, is the cause of the yo-yo diet effect. Loosing weight only to gain it back in less time it took to loose, is absolutely the most frustrating thing in the world. OK so how can I eat healthy, not be bored, loose weight and actually stick to clean eating you ask?! The answer is simple, research. Just like with buying a new car, you need to do a lot of research to know you are getting everything you want out of the money you are spending. Then why wouldn’t you do the same for YOUR new way of life? You are the one who will be putting time and energy into YOUR new eating habits, then are you settling for boring foods you don’t even like? If you like pizza, look online for a pizza made with the closest ingredience to earth you can find. If you like hamburgers, try it without the bun and use a lettuce wrap instead. Not feeling full after eating just meat wrapped in lettuce? Eat more! Just because you are eating healthier does not mean you have to eat less calories or less food. The biggest benefit of eating whole foods is that you get to eat a larger amount of food everyday. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like something I could get use to.
So next time you want a snack, grab an apple, not a cookie. Still hungry? Grab another one! Here is a secret for ya, the fiber content in the apple is the bulk of the calories, and guess what? Fiber CAN NOT be stored as fat, in fact the body doesn’t really absorb those calories at all. Meaning? They do not count towards the total number of calories you eat. Interesting stuff huh!
Here is one of my favorite non-boring low calorie whole food, and filling snacks. Dip carrots, celery, cucumbers or your favorite veggies. Go ahead and eat the whole thing!! Approximate calories, 300.
1 large avocado
1 cup steamed broccoli
1/2 red onion, diced
1 jalapeno, chopped (first charred on a flame if possible)
1 tomato, diced
Juice of half a lime
4 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tsp. of salt
Steam the broccoli until nicely soft, even slightly overdone is okay. They key is for it to not have any toughness, crispness, rigidity at all. Let it cool and in a large mixing bowl, mash it down with your hands, squeezing out a lot of the excess moisture. Next, peel a ripe avocado and mush it up with a fork or your hands if you prefer, mixing it with the avocado. Combine all the remaining ingredients and mix vigorously.
